One Fewer SUV: the Range Rover Sport that will soon be flung into a canyon, blown up, or whatever you vote to do to it. Here it is, feast your eyes on it while it’s still around.

Safari Adventure

I bought this Range Rover brand new in 2006 from the Land Rover dealership. Buying a Land Rover is actually a pretty fun experience, since they treat you like the Queen on a African safari adventure. Even if the roughest terrain your Rover will ever see is the parking lot at Whole Foods (as is the case for most), your Land Rover guide will immediately put you in the passenger seat and take you on their man made off road course and laugh as you sweat bullets swearing that he’s about to roll the SUV on to the passenger window, which appears only inches from the ground. Forget Disneyland, that was fun.

Off-road super toy

Obviously the sheer size, weight, and inefficiency of the Range Rover Sport is the reason for this site. 13 miles per gallon just ain’t good enough. Get your stuff together, Ford Land Rover, luxury doesn’t have to mean pissing gas out the tailpipe.

The Range Rover Sport comes with a 4.4 liter, 300 horsepower Jaguar V8 engine with permanent 4 wheel drive, a 6 speed automatic transmission, and 19″ wheels, standard. Flip the Terrain Response knob (shown in image) to the little picture of a cactus and the whole vehicle will raise up, providing more clearance, as well as tune throttle response, suspension and torque to the specified terrain (cactus means sand, if you aren’t British or in Kindergarten still). This vehicle seriously handles like a sports car, which is great for making friends scream as you rip around freeway on ramps, but the thing drinks like a sailor.

More widgets than your iPhone

If Apple had its way with a Range Rover, you might actually be able to use all the gadgets built into this SUV, but it certainly wouldn’t have anything to add. It all starts with touch screen, DVD-based navigation and a million speaker Harmon Kardon stereo, standard. Mine came outfitted with satellite radio (yes, including a cool shark fin antenna), bluetooth that integrates into the factory radio, as well as dual climate control, front and rear heated seats and windows, and a direct video link to the space station. Okay maybe not the video link.

Nice huh? Cool, let’s get it off the road forever.

Wow, sounds like a beautiful machine. Too bad it’s so badly adapted to modern life in the city. If it were electric powered and fueled by clean electricity, and you had the need to go on safari regularly, then maybe… but as it is, it’s the ideal symbol of wasteful consumption. I mean, the city streets are bad, but not that bad!

I really had mixed feelings last time I rode in this car. It felt wonderful to be riding in a big luxury SUV, high above most of the cars on the road. On the other hand, I didn’t want to be identified as one of those people who drives a gas guzzler without regard for the impact its consumption has on the environment. Most of us won’t be blowing up our cars, but I think this message is so important, because we need to think about what we can do that will make a difference. Can we carpool once a week, bring our reusable bags to the store, ride the bus, teach our kids that what we wear and drive is not nearly as important as what we think, do and say?

Jolee added these pithy words on Jul 21, 08 at 10:54 pm

Although part of me thinks it would be hilarious to watch this thing explode, converting it into some kind of radical, electric powered art-car with a useful purpose would be my choice. Or bury it head-down in the grown, so it would stand like the monolith in 2001…

Nick added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 9:48 am

Dang! Everything about the Range Rover is pure driver candy save the HORRENDOUS gas mileage. I’m currently stuck with a 2002 Jeep Cherokee Loredo that gets about 17 mpg and my main reason for holding onto it is because I inherited it from my father who passed untimely in 2005. It’s like a little floating temple that runs on petro. I’d love to convert it to something like hydrogen but there doesn’t seem to be a soul on earth able to convert gas guzzlers into vapor makers. Help would be appreciated.

Greenpointer added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 10:06 am

“It felt wonderful to be riding in a big luxury SUV, high above most of the cars on the road.”

What feels wonderful about that? I imagine that would feel about as wonderful as wearing a tall hat in a movie theater.

We used to have a Jeep Liberty, and I was always embarrassed to drive it, not because it represented conspicuous consumption, but due to the fact that most people behind me couldn’t see around me. It made me feel like a jerk.

Want to feel wonderful in a car? Get the smallest car you can fit into. I’m 6′4″, and nothing feels better than a car that fits like a glove. Small cars are SO much more fun, and you’ll never feel guilty for blocking somebody’s view.

My bet is that you don’t actually own the vehicle in question. Instead you’re using one to stimulate what in the end will be an empty discussion of feelings about such vehicles. So be it.

Having said that, I would be curious to see how well such a vehicle could be converted to become dramatically more fuel-efficient. Of course this exercise costs money, so I would imagine some sort of competition among the grown number of vendors (some of the more or less sham) for conversion kits, etc…

Riley added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 10:52 am

This really is a great SUV. Having said that, it is not a great commuter or everyday vehicle carbon footprint and all.

There has to be some more creative uses for this other than a romance with C4.
The most exciting would be seeing this converted to biodisel, hybrid or even full electric.

Or maybe dismantling and donating to various SF artists. With all pieces eventually premiered at a showing and all benifits buying some carbon offset http://www.carbonfund.org/ There is a lot of opportunity to be had especially with all the interactive technology that could be ripped out and used.

We all have to start making changes to our habits, so cheers to you for making a small statement yourself. looking forward to the updates

I say convert it to electric, in case the country goes to the crapper and you need to escape droves of cannibalistic citizens…its seems like it would make a good car for that. By electric though I mean slap a solar panel to the roof as well.

James added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 11:19 am

Great Car to dismantle. It should provide a very interesting conversation peice as a touring art show. Yes that is my idea. Dismantle the vehicle piece by piece. Make a art show out of most of it and recycle the rest. Besure that what ever is created can also be dismantled later to recycle or upcycle as well. I would love to see a Range Rover used as artwork.

Stlouisgreen added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 11:33 am

I say you make it into a ‘Mad Max’-style post-apocalyptic assault vehicle, complete with hood-mounted automatic weapons.

Aaron Poehler added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 11:33 am

I say… take it apart and sell or recycle the whole car .. Donate it to a college under the circumstance that they must use it to design a new technology to make it effecient… with out the use of Gas… either through soloar and wind power.. Wouldn’t it be insane to design a car that uses solar power and wind power.. once the solar got the car moving the wind from it movement would some how work back into the car.. h,mmm… anyways..

Zenthis added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 11:40 am

The point is to deliver a message, right? Find an artist and an expert in green to hack off the top, remove the wheels, etc, and turn it into a garden of some kind. I’m sure the city or a business in SF would love to have this artwork in their front yard or park! I’m moving to SF in a few weeks, let me know if you need some help marketing or photographing the project :)

Chris Miller added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 12:16 pm

Blowing up the car sounds cool, but is about as wasteful as driving it. You need to find Dr. Emmitt Brown from back to the future. I’m sure he would love to convert it to Plutonium for you, and then you could travel back in time and help henry ford create a much more sustainable model t.

Jesse added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 12:42 pm

I have the same problem. I own a monster, which is 7 yrs old. If I sell it, someone else will continue polluting the planet. I also need to buy a new car; its production also leaves a footprint. I guess the only option is to find a buyer who uses it less than I do (7.000 miles/year). Or offset.

Keijo added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 1:07 pm

From a purely environmental impact perspective, this car has already created a huge footprint by virtue of its manufacture. It would be more wasteful to not realize the amortization of that impact spread out over the life of the vehicle. Why not donate to a car-share co-op so people who need a honking big SUV for the day to move something or drive to Yosemite in the winter can do so. Personally I find it incredibly annoying when people hop on the bus carrying knock-down furniture and take up a row of seats (you know that’s a joke right?)

Leslie added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 1:14 pm

Have a mechanic disassemble the thing, sell the parts to people who would otherwise be buying new replacement parts, and use the money to do something good for the world. This approach will keep junk out of the landfill, save new resources from being turned into a door panel (or valve cover, or rear differential, etc), and save a ton of energy that would be spent manufacturing new parts.

Mark added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 1:32 pm

Yeah, I’d toss my vote in for converting it to something that doesn’t use fossil fuels. You’ve already bought it, so the resources and energy required to produce your monster have already been spent. Vehicles are currently not made to be efficiently recycled or ‘upcycled’ so it seems in terms of efficiency, making it a non polluting vehicle makes sense. If you’re going for more of a sensational impact, maybe get wilder or go the art installation route, but that could get a lot more expensive too… Honestly, while your heart seems like it’s in the place, your project seems a little self-aggrandizing… Sure every little action can count, but your little dilemma is not going to change much in the larger scheme of things. If you are really concerned about these issues, perhaps your energy would be better spent with a less self-indulgent cause.

Jojo added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 1:42 pm

If you could covert it to a more eco- friendly means of propulsion, and then publish how its done many such as myself would also follow your example. So I say convert it.

Jesse added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 1:45 pm

Take it apart and build a better car.

Anny added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 2:35 pm

Well first off I like the idea of getting rid of gas guzzling SUV’s but the reality of the situation is that they are here and some people will always want one.

People talk about how bad they are for the environment and how they cost a fortune to drive. But lets be honest here everyone didn’t just wake up one mourning and decide that they wanted to go green. Gas prices started to rise and the everyday person started to feel the pinch. It’s only human nature to try to distance yourself from the source of the pain. If gas prices were to drop all this save the planet green movement would slowly go back onto the back burner just like back in the 80’s. The mass public of the world only look out for themselves and not for the greater good. I believe you might actual be willing.

In my opinion you should use this vehicle to show how a gas guzzling SUV can be converted into a eco friendly SUV.

Now people have suggest converting to electric but lets face it that’s going to be a small fortune and the power to weight ratio will make that range rover lose a races to a 4 year old on a big wheel. I am pretty sure that kids would have a better range too. Hydrogen conversions are joke unless you’re a prince off a small country. Bio diesel would be a great idea if the truck wasn’t powered by a gasoline engine. So what does this leave you with?

Really only one option Bio-Mass. Now you might wonder what this is because I know I was when I read about it. First off it’s not some hippies idea thought up during a sweet trip.

No it’s an idea that was spawned by looking back in the history books. Ok now for a little trip back in the way back machine. Over 60 years ago there was this little thing that you might have heard of it. Some people call it the war to end all wars but to most of us it’s World War 2. See back then there was a fuel shortage going on kind of like now, because tanks and planes don’t run on happy feelings you know.

The point is people had to find a way to get around without the need for gasoline. So someone very smart thought up the idea of using wood in a wood-fueled gasification reactor to power a normal gasoline vehicle. For those of you who are wondering what the hell a wood-fueled gasification reactor is it’s basically a stove that limits the air entering the stove to keep the fire lit but not enough to burn all the fuel release from the wood (A.K.A BIOMASS). Which are carbon monoxide, Carbon Dioxide and hydrogen. Well all know hydrogen burns from the great Hindenburg disaster. These gases when put into a normal gasoline engine can be burnt without any modifications to the engine.

Now you might be wondering why i would suggest killing trees to fuel this eco tank from hell. It’s because I am not suggesting that what I am suggesting is this. Here is where you take a little of the old tech and spin the idea with some new tech and end up with something better. Think Google. They weren’t the first search engine out there but they were able to take a technology and make it better and we all love them for it.

In the San Francisco you have one of the highest coffee shops to person ratio on the planet. I believe some of you don’t even sleep, but that’s a side note on this never ending letter.

Now for the idea: If you where to recycle the old used coffee grounds and compressed them into pellet form. This is the same process as using sawdust to process wood pellets for wood stoves. You could power the range rover from this energy source that is normally just considered trash.

Yes you’re not going to save the planet but do you think that taking one range rover off the road will. If you need advice this would be mine. It’s not going to cost a lot of money to build a wood-fueled gasification reactor. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) back in 1989 developed a document that explained how to build such a device. Now to be really smart I would suggest is making this and then getting sponsorship from a corporation like starbucks. They want to be in the news for looking green and the vehicle would be a great way to get media attention. Then you’d get to keep the beautiful range rover you have and your truck wouldn’t be looked as a planet killer.

Now this is just a idea but it sounds like your looking for something that is going to get media attention. So this there is it. People have converted lots of cars to electrics nothing new there, no one believes hydrogen works for the public, and Bio Diesel is tired as well. If you’re looking for shock and awe this would be it. The world is so depend on only what a few company offer use that we love when someone does something different.

AJ added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 2:52 pm

I don’t get it. Why would you destroy the car rather than sell it? You say it’s because you don’t want someone else polluting in it, but the truth of the matter is that it will cause more pollution due to the fact that another Range Rover will be made. If you can sell it used, there’s a chance that the demand for new Range Rovers will decrease, and only THEN will you have less pollution.

temugen added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 4:02 pm

Give it to me. I’ll not drive it. I’ll keep it as a Luxury Art in front of my door.

Soldats added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 4:17 pm

Sell it… for as much as you can, no strings attached. (I hear Al Gore has some dough.) Then… use the money to buy electric scooters / motorcycles. Then trade the electric scooters / motorcycles for as many crappy old polluting cars as you can (shouldn’t be hard in SF) and get THEM off the road. While you’d leave one 12MPG beast on the road… you could probably remove a dozen or more others. Call me… I have a gigantic Ford Expedition that needs to go away. Good Luck… on this most noble endeavor.

Doug added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 4:35 pm

You are insane. Throwing away a perfectly good car that you like(!) based on what is a scientifically unproven idea. Sad.
However, if you are going to persist with this ridiculous experiment, what “Mark” said above ( Jul 24, 08 at 1:32 pm) is the most sensible option, however you don’t get that dramatic flair or photo op with Al Gore.

theo added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 4:46 pm

When I was a kid I went a Boy Scouts camp jamboree, or what ever they called it, and they had an event where you could pay to use various implements of destruction for a certain amount of time to take apart an old car. One dollar got you a minute with a ball-peen hammer, five bucks got you two minutes with the 16lb sledge hammer, and so on. You could actually raise money for some worthy cause and nix the Rover with out any carbon emissions, no flames, no smoke, no explosion (as much as we all love that stuff) and not even any electricity!
So that’s what I think you should do, hand tools and brute force. Explosions are cool (really freakin’ cool), but nothing is more awesome than shear human rage set loose with tools.

Tim added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 4:46 pm

The best thing that you could do with this Range Rover is to find the oldest Range Rover in the US and trade your clean car for one that is dirty. Perhaps trade with the person who has the dirtiest licensed Range Rover in the continental US.

Work done at the University of Colorado shows that “gross emmitters” can generate 500 times the noxious compounds into the air than a newer emissions compliant car.

Blowing your RR up rather than one which pollutes to a much greater extent would be truly irresponsible

Africa added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:02 pm

Just pretending for a second that you’re for real, which I doubt. Somehow trashing the car would show an incredible disregard for the environmental footprint of having it produced in the first place, but keeping it on the road wouldn’t be too hot either. So give it a long-term purpose that doesn’t involve feeding it more fuel. Something like a chicken run, or a tree house.

Bert added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:02 pm

First off there is the heritage of the Land Rover Marque it is a beautiful vehicle. Just ask the guys at eastcoastrovers.com to drop a diesel into it and burn french fry oil.

Second, I drive a SUV and wonder why people don’t pick on PU Trucks as “the enemy” talk about popular delusions.

Ok, blowing it up would be pretty cool, but there are already alot of videos on the net of cars blowing up. One more just wont make any difference. Also, the idea of converting it to an electric or hybrid would be very interesting to watch. The big problem with that is that even as a hybrid I can’t imagine it getting better mileage than a standard car due to the excessive weight in a land rover’s build.

With all of that said here is my idea. Its not really well thought out as I am just writing this while I think. Make it the ending to an elaborate Rube Goldberg setup that is designed to list information about how humanity is having a very adverse effect on the environment. The finale has to be something incredible to drive people to send the video on to their friends, which will also spread the massage. So, for the finale the SUV is released on a crash course with a scale model of the planet painted onto a wrecking ball that is swinging towards it. Stop the video right before the ball hits the SUV with a message along the lines of “Is driving a big car worth the planet?” The resume with the smashing.

Fish added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:36 pm

I think the thought of one less vehicle could be the way. To live in San Francisco and have a vehicle does sound absurd. There is a lot of alternative transportation in the city that is overcrowded. Friends and family that live in SF say that they enjoy taking the alternative then to pay high gas prices and outrageous parking fees. Just donate or give the vehicle to someone(like me) that doesnt have a vehicle that can pull a fifth wheel to go vacation or take their family on a vacation to the hills to enjoy mother nature’s wonder before they cant. It is cheaper to use a SUV to pull a fifth wheel or use an RV rather then traveling by plane, staying at a hotel, and then going out to eat. Staying in a RV or fifth wheel and cooking and staying in a hook-up spot is better. Then it encourages the people to possible sit out and enjoy mother nature. Then always watching TV and going out. The sky is a wonderful thing to enjoy and showing your children what nature is about is a whole lot better,.

Joseph R added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:38 pm

If I were you, I would give the thing to me because I am currently driving a 1989 Ford F-150 4×4. I cannot afford a newer one since I have 6 kids and a wife. It would also get gas mileage than the van we have as well. I do need a vehicle that is more eco-friendly but I also need to haul quite a few family members as well. If you are going to destroy something that caused pollution to make teh you are not doing anyone a favor by blowing it up causing a fireball of pollution, nor would it be wise to donate it to a college that is rich enough to finance anything it wants and most colleges have way too many SUVs, with just one person driving, on the road as it is. A donation to me would only make sense. Yes, I would use it, but only when I needed to travel. And if you donated the thing to me then we would both be doing our part to have less of an impact on this great earth. Please consider this instead of an idea that would not work anyway, because if there really was a way to manufacture the perfect engine, the oil companies would buy the patent and destroy it anyway.

Ryan, I find this way over the top as people are struggling with the mortgage crisis. I am strapped to my eyeballs in student loans and you want to a perfectly good albeit impractical car that you purchased and got a huge tax write off.
Question one: How can you dispose of this car in a eco-friendly way?
Question two: Why not conert it to a biodiseal vehicle?

I am truly appalled by the notion that you have 60k to piss away in this manner. Your actions are not altruistic they are as wasteful as the car.

1. SMASH IT to wreck it: (The fun part)

2. RECYCLE IT COMPLETELY.

Get a permit to take it apart in a PUBLIC PLACE. You and some freinds can tear it apart and put all of the parts into pieces based on type of plastic or steel. Sell the parts to a scrap dealer and keep the money. Its shiny but it’s a 60K hunk of junk for real, so show it piles, a breakdown, for what you actually own (weigh the piles…).

1 GALLON to move 1 person 13 miles is a total joke in 2008, that is worse mileage than when cars were invented 100 years ago. Blame or government for its encouragement of wastefull practices, and lack of governance to encourage better ones.

Good Job. Enjoy!

edward added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:42 pm

I think you should use it as intended, but try to abuse it as much as possible. Drive it offroad, on steep slants. If it rolls, it rolls. Drive through water. If the engine gets flooded, so be it. Keep abusing it until it doesn’t run anymore.

Or convert it to electric. Of course, this involves putting in more money to it, so that may not be the best idea. But the benefits are astronomical, especially when it comes to saving money / the planet.

Or you could bury it… and lay concrete over it… maybe leave the roof above ground for use as a table?

Bye the way people I just read an article that says cow farts are more to blame for the global warming problem then cars. So save that beautiful car or sell it and give the money to someone who needs it.

This proves only one thing. Anyone willing to just throw away $60+ grand shows that Liberalism is definitely a mental disorder.

I just hope he feels good after he realizes that he blew $60+ grand for something that did not change a single thing and that he still has to pay for it if it is not paid off.

By the way, if it is not paid off, he better get an attorney because the creditors are coming after him.

RBCinTexas added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:44 pm

Since Global Warming is a myth and its a newer and better vehicle than most people I know own plus the fact this is nothing more than a publicity stunt Why not go all the way with it?

Put yourself, Al Gore and as many Green freaks in it and then drive off a cliff. Im sick and tired tired of hearing about Global Warming

Sean added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:44 pm

I’d say, gut it and grow your own veggies in it. For what it’s worth, the “Globe” has been “warming” ever since the last iceage, or we’d still be in an iceage. However we’re not helping the situation.

JoG added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:46 pm

I think you should do a trade down program. There must be vehicles out there that are even less efficient than yours. Trade down until you hold in your possession the most gas guzzling vehicle of them all (maybe a monster truck or a drag racer) and destroy that one. The idea is like the paper clip trade from a while back, but with an eco twist.

Chris added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:46 pm

Sell it, use the money to become educated on the true facts about global warming, not the Gore crap. Climate change is a cycle, caused by the sun. You might want to consider how much carbon will take to build your replacement vehicle.

Scott added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:47 pm

Keep it, you bought it because you like it so don’t destroy it or you can give it to me. =0)

Rosa added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:47 pm

Burning it or driving it down the cliff will actually increase your carbon footprint. Therefore I think you should convert it to a hydrogen or electric vehicle.

Or donate it to an NGO that could really use it on the rough terrains of some developing country. It could really help out an organization that can use it on the terrain the vehicle was designed for.

Joseph added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:48 pm

Just donate it to charity instead of selling it. Won’t take it off the road, but at least someone worthy will get value out of it.

Africa, errr, no. They use diesel there. Besides these newer RRs are way too unreliable.

Just seems like a silly stunt to me.

The trick in general is to just drive less, no matter what you drive. If you can afford it and need to drive, get something that uses less gas. If you don’t need to drive, how wonderful for you; not every one has that option.

But sheesh, don’t blow it up. What a waste in so many ways.

ed added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:48 pm

Please just take it apart by hand and recycle each and every component. Then, any revenue from the recyclers can be donated to a “Green-friendly” charity, to do some real good. Anything else is pretentious and a waste in the faces of less fortunate people. Think about it.

Zinny added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:49 pm

I am a college student so I can’t afford a hybrid and am stuck driving a truck that get’s about 10/15 miles per gallon. So if you really want to save the environment you could give me the more efficient range rover and kill my truck!!!!! Their is many of people out there that drive cars & trucks around that make a much bigger negative impact on the environment and can’t afford to better their situation. This is the process that makes the most sense in regards to removing a gas guzzler but killing a range rover would get more attention and possibly attract more followers. Good luck with what ever you choose. I am very curious of what kind of transportation you will by next.

Robert Lamont added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:49 pm

Convert it to Diesel, THEN convert it to run on SVO (- straight vegetable oil) or WVO (- waste vegetable oil)… Then donate it to a college to spread awareness.

gunbunnysoulja added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:49 pm

My idea would be to give it to me and I will get permanently store my V12 vehicle, which is FAR more of an environmental nightmare and gets about 4mpg, and has 2 engines. Unfortunately the Real Estate slump has created a situation where I cannot sell my car, nor afford another one. You donation to me would take an even WORSE CAR off the road. I would take the Rover and paint it green! That’s my vote!

Meeh Jacobs added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:49 pm

In my opinion, destroying the car is not the best way to spread the message of global warming, air pollution and whatnot. Sure, maybe you’ll end up inspiring a handful of others who are eco-obsessed and wealthy enough to waste 60,000 to destroy a good car, but if I am right about the message that you’re trying to send, the SUV could be put to better use by being sold; the money could then be used to plant trees or donate to the WWF to save the polar bears. Be creative & use logic.

Kathy added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:50 pm

What’s the historical production carbon footprint of the vehicle, i.e. the CO2 produced to just make the vehicle… So if you sell the parts of the Vehicle then there will be one less of each part needed to be produced and the world will be greener…. also you can get good money for parts

Edward added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:51 pm

What a waste! How is it better to destroy it and waste all of the resources that went into it. There are so many people who could use a car and cannot afford on. Why don’t you give it to one of them? Or, hold a raffle for the car and give the money that was collected to an environmental charity?

Stacy added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:51 pm

Men burning that car will be worse than driving it. It will emit so much toxic you will wish you never did. Quick solution for you. I do humanitarian work in Kenya. I have an SUV too that I’m driving it’s not fully paid for but as soon as it’s done I will be sending it to Africa to support the cause. If you really wanna burn up an SUV we can trade. Yours will definitely kick ass on the African terrain better than what I have and by so doing you will feel better about yourself knowing that you helped feed a child in the most remote area of the world where no other has been due to difficult terrain. Let me know what you think.

Eli Ndaba added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:51 pm

Nicole added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:52 pm

First off, I would drain all the fluids from it. Maybe donate the gas to an organization or something and drop off the oil to a disposal facility.

As for the rest of it, I’d probably just sell it to a junk yard. You’ll get some cash back for it and help someone out if they need spare parts for the same make and model. Just an idea.

Dan B added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:52 pm

well if your gonna destroy such a nice vehicle, why don’t you just take it for some extreme off roading and see how long it lasts, push the SUV till it is no more…it may defeat the purpose of saving gas but it would be fun

Josh added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:52 pm

Hey wait!!!! Why trash it? When you could turn around, sell it, and use that money to start an electric car conversion business! According to a Do It Yourself group of people in California, an average car costs 8 grand to convert to electric! I saw it on CNN! Didn’t you see the movie “Who killed the electric car”? We NEED more independent people starting up conversion businesses! Taking that kind of control out of the governments hands is the only way you can make a real statement! Now that you’ve got peoples attention with your SUV, go electric! Solar energy into electricity is the only real choice.

Scott Taylor added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:53 pm

why not get as many investors as possible to invest as much money as possible to find a cost effective way to convert petrol vehicles to alt energy vehicles. get a team together to invent a way. patent the idea and sell it to the highest bid and reimburse the investors or let them have shares in the patent.

john added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:53 pm

Destroying the SUV, although dramatic, may not be the right idea. It does not make any sense. The first place, you should have not bought it. I have thesame SUV but a supercharged one. its 17 mpg. But I drive it to my work in the freeway. And also I have a big family. If you’re single, why the h__l did you buy a big SUV!!! If you want to make a statement, try to put it in perspective by looking at what exactly was the reason you bought it. Sure, burn all the SUV’s and buy a Prius. But my family came in for a vacation and we drove to the mountains and we still have to drive in 2 cars. In the end, which is more efficient, 1 car or two cars? Most off you here probably does not have a big family like I have. Probably you saw the good looks of the SUV and wanted it as a symbol(YOU BOUGHT A RR right?). If there is an SUV here in this planet that can seat more than 8, and has a gas mileage of 24mpg at least, then I will buy it immediately. But until then, leave my SUV alone.

What I would recommend to you is to sell it to somebody who needs. Yeah, its cool to blow something up, but whats your alternative?

Jack Midland added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:53 pm

Here is an idea…give the thing to me so I can convert it to bio-diesel, and still have a wonderful suv that can go anywhere. But anything doing with blowing it up, pushing off a cliff, making it immobile or anything to that nature would not be environmentally sound. And the best thing to do would be to give it to someone who could use it like a surfer.

Alexander Zgura added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:55 pm

If you blow it up you will be further disrespecting the Earth. Every thing is of the earth. Recycle that car and take care of the earth. Destruction is negativity and hate. Creation is positivity and love. Use your brain!

Jamie added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:56 pm

Why don’t you just convert it to use E85? 30% less emissions and less utilization of gasoline….or you can sell it and donate the proceeds to a University or organization that is promoting green technologies…by destroying it, the marginal benefit that you create is pretty small compared to what the money you can get for it…

Andrew added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:56 pm

Donate the car to a suitable emergency respoonse organization. They will have use for this type of vehicle during a flood, tornado or other natural disaster. If you can convert it to hybrid/electric before doing so, all the better. The car could be emblazoned with eco logos as well to help spread environmental consciousness.

Plugger added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:59 pm

me added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:59 pm

i say you take it to one of those places that will put a diesel engine in it that can run on veggie oil. that would def. help the enviroment more than blowing it up and sending all that smoke and oils and stuff. or, better yet, i have an expedition that’s more of a gas gussler, and i’ll trade you, you take my expedition and blow it up, and i’ll take your nice new range rover and drive it around looking awesome

Phil added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 5:59 pm

I think the vehicle should be donated to a University where students can work on changing it on different levels. An engineering department could have the opportunity to remove the gasoline engine and put in an electric, biodiesel, or hydrogen engine. And art students could make this thing stand out against a crowd with a new paint job and interior. It seems wasteful to just throw the car in a ravine or blow it up when it could be made into an extraordinary green machine.

Quincy added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:00 pm

Just like a hermit crab may make its home in a soda can, or a bird may weave a plastic bag into its nest, let the environment assimilate the SUV. Let it go back from whence it came. Drain all oil, gas, coolant, or any other pollutants incl. lcd screens, batteries, etc. Then fill the gas tank with concrete and tow it to the most affluent area of San Fransico. Then make a photo journal of its life on a daily basis until it decomposes into some urban corpse.

Grant added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:02 pm

Hello, Yahoos. I agree this is a publicity stunt and the vehicle or owner - or both - don’t exist. But if they do and this is for real, sell it or donate it to a charity.

What’s done is done. Destroying the vehicle and/or manufacturing a new hybrid will be far worse for the planet than keeping the vehicle well-tuned and following correct driving habits.

Me? 1993 Mustang, 175,000 miles, 28 MPG. I’ll drive it till the wheels fall off.

Alan added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:03 pm

You say that in 2006 “a big part of the motivation then was the huge tax write off for heavy SUVs.” What huge tax write off are you referring to? I’m unclear how you were saving money by buying a Range Rover.

Chris Finley added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:04 pm

I feel that you should convert it into a hybrid (put a toyota “highlander”) engine on it and give it to a needy family or an organization that is helping out the enviorment.

Aaron added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:04 pm

Wow this looks cool and I have plenty ideals but I agree with some other people that it does need to go because it is so bad for the environment but it should have a purpose such as like maybe sent back to the campany and maybe they could reuse the parts and you could probably get payed for it too. And also wouldn’t it be kind of bad for the environment if you blew it into the ocean with all those chemicals in it and if you blew it up wouldn’t it add to greenhouse or something. i totally agree that it should be gone but I think you should seriously consider something more “green” if you catch my drift.

Also if you are a “green” person you should visit http://www.recycle-all.webs.com

Allen added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:05 pm

What a waste. Auction it off for a green charity. People are not going to stop buying them anyway. You’ll save a new one from being constructed.

Ray added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:06 pm

You could give the SUV to me then you could get my gas guzzling, air polluting 79′ Chevy Blazer off of the road forever instead. My vehicle doesn’t even have a catalytic converter which produces even more pollution and in addition to that it leaks oil like a sieve. I do however still need a vehicle to drive everyday and cant afford to get anything else at this time. If you still want to destroy your Range Rover then take it to a wrecking yard have them pick it up with one of those cranes and drop it a couple of times and then run it through the car crusher. It would be fairly environmentally friendly. Thats my idea tell me what you think.

If you donate it to 1-800-Charity Cars we will provide it absolutely free to a struggling family and you can receive a tax-deduction for the “fair Market value” of the vehicle. We lead the nation in providing free cars to the needy. 899 vehicles worth over $5 million dollars last year alone. The benefit of saving a family is simply to important to ignore. Thid would certainly be a statement worth making. 1-800-Charity Cars also runs a 24 acre organic farm for the needy and supports your environmental stance. Good job and whatever your decision is thanks for performing such a selfless act!

Brian Menzies added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:07 pm

i don’t believe trashing your SUV would be “environmentally friendly” as to speak. The best way is to completely recycle all the parts by disassembling it and recycling it, reusing it. It makes no sense that driving it off a cliff or blowing it up would benefit the environment anymore. The best possible solution is to recycle the whole car and begin a video of the car disassembled and then in turn, turned into a home or a new hydro fuel cell vehicle or into a solar paneled recharging vehicle (running solely on the sun and battery). Things could get really interesting if we could bring back the “Wind-up” vehicles again and just manually wind them up and let it loose! Now that my friend, is Awesome!

RUSS added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:12 pm

Hmmm…so I read through all these things and saw some pretty good ideas. Before I read all of this, I was pretty much thinking of some kind of artwork kind of thing…but realistically, other than getting it off the road, what does that help? Nothing really.

So as I was going along I was trying to think, what else could be done that would actually make this thing useful???

Honestly, I was unable to come up with anything really original, but I wanted to comment, because I saw a couple of other good ideas here.

The one about using the coffee grounds to fuel it was very interesting and really kind of a cool idea. It would certainly get publicity and maybe make people think, but realistically, it still would probably not make a huge impact. Let’s face it, not that many people are going to go to the effort of making those drastic changes.

So, from all the ideas so far, I would say you have two options. I really like the idea of trading it to someone else who has a horrible, old one and trading it in for all those scooters and motorcycles like Doug mentioned above. That would be really cool to get MORE than one bad vehicle off the road…

Also, I REALLY like the idea of donating it to some really great humanitiarian agency who does great work in Africa. No, it wouldn’t help the pollution problem, but it would be extremely useful and help them in their work. Like someone mentioned above, there are actually places where they NEED these kinds of vehicles because there is no other good way to get from place to place being that there are no roads, etc.

So all in all, I would say you should find a way to donate it and have it taken to where it can actually be useful.

Whatever you decide to do, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT BLOW IT UP!!! I am sure you are smart enough to realize that if you were to blow it up, it would cause more pollution that 20 years of driving it!!

Anyway, cheers on your decision to get rid of it. I am always happy to know of people who are trying to change the way they use our resources.

Lizzibeth added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:12 pm

I think this might be the single dumbest “green” idea I have ever heard. This guy is just another California publicity whore who found a new niche to throw himself into. It’s really great that you have so much money to burn but maybe you could actually think about this for a second and actully get something accomplished with that POS, instead of just turning it into more waste. Here’s an idea, seeing as how its so incredible off road, why don’t you donate the damn thing to a state park or FEMA so it can actually do what it was designed to do and accomplish some good. You could even go one step further and raise some money to convert the crappy engine in that thing to electric or diesel hybrid. Then gut all the BS thats on the interior and actually put that prissy wagon to work. Then you can sleep better and the thing will actually have a purpose other than taking up landfill space. If you really gave a shit about the planet you would have just traded this thing in and gotten a hybrid, but instead you figured “why not get some attention” and maybe even make a buck. You want to save the planet? Try being a little bit selfless and just doing something without this ridiculous publicity stunt. If you destroy the thing your a fool, and it won’t make an iota of difference to the planet. What, you think the average working class guy is gonna see what you’ve done and go out in his driveway and take an axe to his work truck? Maybe you can afford a 60K vehicle and then just toss it but this country is in a recession and its a slap in the face to see people like you just living it up and wasting things for no reason other then getting your face on this idiotic website. I’ll leave you with one more idea, how about you donate the damn thing, what environmental organization couldn’t use an extra 50K right now? Its crap like this that makes the world hate this country, you should pat yourself on the back for contributing to the stereotype of America’s wastefulness. That’s my rant, I hope you do drive the car off a cliff and make lots of money and get all the attention you deserve. But know that you are in no way, shape, or form doing this for the planet, the sooner you admit that to yourself the better off you’ll be.

I know that you want to do something for the environment; having said that, what about making the world in general a better place to live? If you really don’t want your vehicle, donate it to a Battered Woman’s shelter. Some woman out there who has been abused would love something that she could safely take her children to and from home, school; where she could feel like a human being again. Trust me, I know from where I speak.

Yvonne Smith added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:14 pm

Why don’t you start your own museum of the era we used this kind of car? I think in 20-30 years, many children will have the curiosity to know how was the rumbling of such an engine.

Tiago Biazus added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:14 pm

I don’t get it… mr. go green wants to launch the car into the ocean? Polluting the ocean? This wouldn’t even enter your mind if you were truly doing this for environmental purposes.

Want to be environmental… recycle it. Oh wait you’ll just be helping china industrialize as they’re buying all our metal anyways.

Want to do something great. Donate it to someone that needs a car. Or give it to someone that doesn’t commute and would just be using it for a few thousand miles a day.

Or trade it in and get a smart car or something. Destroying an incredible machine isn’t going to do anyone any good at all as most of the ideas you’re gonna get are going to cost time and money to clean up and properly dispose of the car and the rest of them are going to directly negatively effect the environment (Like tossing it in the ocean or burning it)

So… my proposal is to give it to someone that can use it.

1ManArmy added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:14 pm

The Land Rover already exists. It has already been produced. Whatever environmental damage (carbon footprint) was done through its production is already done. By destroying it, one creates nothing new except garbage. (sorry, but I’m not buying this art installation idea either - that’s a copout) In today’s society and today’s economy any luxury vehicle no matter what amount of gas it uses is valuable to someone. For that matter, any car of any make would be valuable to someone in need. Taking that car off the road does not stop its carbon footprint. It will only be replaced by another car. A carbon footprint is only stopped by the person driving the car itself and by individual responsibility. In other words, we aIl have to continue conserve fuel as much as possible and keep the cars that we have instead of trading them in for something new.

I suggest donating that Land Rover to a charitable organization. One that would benefit from a truck - hauling goods, food, or whatever. Maybe an organization that is looking to purchase a vehicle. This would slow the process of demand and eventually production.

And if the PARENTS with “more room for kids”…give me a break…stop feeding them so much so they’ll all fit! Ok, so that’s a bit cruel.
As for your car…I know you won’t really do something wasteful…
I do like the idea above about donating it to Africa…but again…then its just the same problem in a new location…
Can we just stop making them?
Recycle it and scrap it…so every piece of it can go to a better use.

Anne added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:15 pm

Fantastic idea.

Once, we had a 1966 Toyota Corolla that “died.” While certainly not in the same class - or universe - as this beautiful hunk of opulence, our final resting place for the Toyota was scrap yard for what we could pull out and recycle/sell, but the rest became a yard planter.

That’s my vote. Gut this thing, then plant strawberries in the shell.

The material the this machine was made with will be use again. This machine should be donated to a school or college to make it an eclectic vehicle or just give it to me a broke college student that’s trying to make it threw school. I know you got money and don’t care about losing a sixty thousand dollar item, but think about the other people not just your self sixty thousand dollars is a lot of food. So please be an good man that your are and don’t destroy this machine it has done nothing to you. It protected you from danger and death, that you want to thank it by destroying it. So if u feel the need of getting rid of this machine, I would be happy to take it off your hand but promise promise to make it more Eco friendly. Oh yeah, and ummm…c’mon man, get serious…how is catapulting it into the Pacific Ocean going to help anything?? THAT would be pollution at it’s finest…NOT a good idea…

Lizzibeth added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:20 pm

I’m sure you’ve heard this more times than you can count; but you could always trade me rigs! I own a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee and would gladly hand it over for demolition. I also live in the Northwest corner of Oregon, and will ACTUALLY use the Rover for what it was intended - off road. We hike, camp, fish and hunt. So yes, I really DO use my 4×4 for what it was made to do, not just run to get groceries or play “soccer mom”.

But….I suppose that’s not a viable option. So my suggestion is to convert it to an HHO engine. We’re working on doing it to our lawn tractor. http://www.hho-fuel.com/ Why destroy something and create more garbage and pollution, when you can convert it and donate it?

Jenni added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:20 pm

Ford only made this car because they knew there was demand for it. Don’t blame Ford, blame yourself. If you already blew $60k on this, why not throw another $20k or so and make it a plug in hybrid?

Dave added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:22 pm

I’m sorry, but this just seems like a terrible publicity stunt… if you really cared about the envirnoment you would not have bought the thing in the first place. And then you certaintly wouldn’t be blowing it up or destroying an ecosytem by dumping it. Do something truly green… Sell it and donate the money to conservationist organization. If you don’t want it to ever be driven again, then sell it for parts. Or be truly revolutionary and modify the engine to run on ethanol or another fuel source. Don’t just make more trash for us to deal with.

Vicki added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:22 pm

I would like to help with your cause. We could do a swap for my 3/4 ton Silverado and get an even bigger gas guzzler off the road.

Jennifer added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:23 pm

This idea sounds dumb. You will do more enviromental damage blowing this up or driving off the cliff than you would giving it to charity and letting someone else drive it. Get real, and stop trying to gain your fame.

Joel added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:24 pm

destroying it would be more wasteful than driving it! Switch it over to propane if you want a cheaper cleaner fuel only costs about $1000 to convert. or you could send it to me in Canada where I will use it for its intended purpose of off roading

Julius added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:25 pm

I think it’s great that you’re helping the environment, but I wouldn’t destroy your Rover. Maybe you could strip it down and sell all the parts to other motor companies for them to use on a more fuel-concious type of vehicle. The money you make can go to some kind of “pollution awareness” charity or something comprised of people who are doing something along the lines of what you want to

Riley added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:25 pm

Who the fuck gets rid of a car in order to help the earth. 100,000 range rovers off the street won’t even remotely dent the movement towards less green house gases. You could not drive 100,000 of these things for 1000 years and it wouldn’t make the slightest difference. The world has already entered a cycle of warming due to methane pockets being released into the atmosphere. Methane is 10x more powerful than co2 in terms of a green house gas and 100,000 times more abundant. People need to harvest methane, not stop driving gas consuming cars. You fucking idiots follow the media to every word they say that’s why your so fucking ignorant on this car vs. green house gas shit that going on right now.

This guy is a fucking moron, instead of trying to help the earth, which him and anyone who follows him wont do, how about he sells the car and donates the money to starving people and actually help someone out. The pure ignorance that people have been brain washed with about this earth shit is sickening the way it makes people do stupid shit like this instead of actually helping someone or a group of people. This guy is an absolute fucking idiot.

YourAFag added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:25 pm

We own a Suburban that gets 10 miles to the gallon. You should trade us for ours (this saves 3 mpg on “a” our vehicle) and carry out the plans on our vehicle. This way you still raise awareness, but also help reduce our carbon foot print. No deal? It was worth a shot. Seriously, I think the most immediate solution is to embrace “moderation”. You can keep the Rover, but set yourself a CO2 limit to emmit per year that is comparable to that of…say a Prius. This might only require you to Bart, MUNI, Carpool, etc. 2-3 time per week. It’s the people you see on HW 101/1 driving a large SUV or Sedan alone everyday that I’m concerned about. Plus there are so many trips that people take in their automobiles that are unnecessary…come on we will drive X miles to have a cup of coffee that we could have made in our home. Therefore, I vote that you document for one year how you adjusted your transportation habits to emit the same amount of CO2 in your 13 mpg Rover as Joe Green did driving his Hybird-Electric thing-a-ma-jig. I believe it would be very instructive.

SA added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:26 pm

Recycle every part possible. You can sell the metal parts, (and possibly other materials), and donate ALL of the proceeds to a non-profit charity. Non-profits are strapped for cash in this economy and you would be “saving two birds with one stone.”

Debbie added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:26 pm

Sell it for scrap, and then do something productive with the cash. Or, donate it to a park ranger facility, they actually use all those weird features on an SUV since they’re on mountains in the middle of nowhere.

Ivan Borschov added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:26 pm

dude you’re retarded, keep the car!

matt added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:28 pm

Give it to charity, destroying it would be wasteful. There are families that need a car to get to work. I think you are a bit hypocritical in that the only reason why you started this was b/c you moved to SF! If you hadn’t moved, you would still be another ignorant yuppie driving around a gas guzzler to stroke your own ego. And now youre going green??? Better late than never I guess.

Dorota added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:28 pm

If you really want to effect change, why don’t you donate this vehicle to an organization that can use it in their work, such as the EPA or even Greenpeace. That would be a more sensible disposition than destroying it, and would actually become a tool to promote your values. Please be sensible about this.

Russ added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:29 pm

Your an idiot, and obviously have more money than sense. If your that worried about the enviroment, then convert it to run on propane. It’s relativly cheap, won’t effect reliabilty, and produces 75% less emmisions. Burning, blowing it up will create more pollution than just driving it.

JC Bryant added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:29 pm

The Range Rover is my personal best SUV ever. However, getting rid of it by destroying it will not benefit the cause as much as you may think; maybe by 0.0000000000000 something percent. But, if you insist on a suggestion, i will strongly recommend selling the car in auction for the highest bidder, letting it be known that the proceeds will all be donated to an environmental research organization. Keeping our fingers crossed that the cash you will provide will help rid the planet of tens of Range Rovers and just your. One last suggestion, with a little research if you ever choose to sell the car maybe you can sell it to someone living in a less polluted environment where the car will have less damaging effects if any.

Mustafa Milad added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:29 pm

I vote you make it powered by solar (charge battery packs) and wind (once you’re moving) Then take people on nature drives

Spootypuff added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:30 pm

I feel that blowing up the car will polute the air, and pushing it off a cliff would leave the wreckage in the nature…. Just sell the parts and probably buy a green car. Maybe you can purchase a GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid, or a more simple choice, a Toyota Prius.

Ivan added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:31 pm

First off, as an ex Bay Area resident I want to say to everyone else how misconstrued and misled all of the earth first hippie activists are. San Francisco is the Motherland of all ignorant environmental claims and it is absurd. The fear tactic that was started in the Bay Area and that the media runs with is very exaggerated. I am proud to be a geologist and I am proud to do my job respectfully without bias. The impact of the “SUV” is not going to kill the earth in the next 100 years like everyone says it will, its not going to hurt anything but your wallet really.

This could be argued for hours, so rather than start a shit storm, I will throw in my two cents.

Convert the thing to biodiesel or install a hydrogen assist cell. My job requires me to have an off-road capable vehicle and I have a lifted Jeep Grand Cherokee. I installed a Hydrogen Assist Cell ($1850) and it gets around 38 mpg in town. I would say install either or and give it to an organization that could really use it. No sense in destroying a vehicle that a charitable foundation could use.

Anyway, thats my idea. I hope something positive comes out of this instead of a bunch of left wingers destroying something because of an ignorant view of how emissions should stand.

T.J. added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:32 pm

you know, you should have a professional destroy the car, because if you set it on fire, all that ash pollutes the environment. Most of the ways all pollutes the environment, in fact. Maybe you should give away the tires, the wind shields… I mean after all, everyone else that’s still driving would also need those parts. Rather than getting the parts by buying them, wouldn’t it better to save one extra tire that the tire company has to make or same that one light bulb that the tire company has to make?

Cornelia added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:33 pm

Swap it, with someone who has an suv that waste more gas. Then part out and recycle the suv you got in return.
This is the simplest solution.

Roy added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:33 pm

Why dont you redo the whole thing completely and make it into like a hybrid or something…change the motor to a different more fuel efficient motor. That would be pretty sweet.

What a Waste! If you truly want it off the road do it right. Remove all fluids and crush it into a small cube. Save it as art. Keep it it on display and pay to move it with you to your next house. Recycling the parts will only encourage others to continue driving theirs’, as will donating it to anybody! “Art cars” suck, don’t do that! Technology to re-create your SUV is too expensive and will just make a different version of another piece of crap. Crush it and put it in your living room with a glass tabletop. Elegant waste!

I think trashing a prefectly good SVU is irresponsible and stupid. There needs to be a balance between the extreme left enviromentalists who disregard any science that doesn’t line up with their theories and the extreme right who disregard common sense enviromental concerns. The world is not endanger of burning up in the next couple hundred years, but we should take a common sense approach to conserving energy when we can( turn off a light) and reducing pollution. people I know it’s a new concept but use common sense and reject talking head elitists like Al( I invented the Internet) Gore.

Steve Locricchio added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:39 pm

Why would you but this machine? If you are so “green” and environmentally conscious, there should be no reason to get caught up in this consumer battle.. Why does anyone need a $60,000 SUV that sucks gas? They don’t need, they want, because it is a staus symbol. And to you Mr. Ryan Mickle, I am ashamed that you got caught up in having to buy this car mainly because your neighbors, or your co workers have it, and because it is a staus symbol. No matter what you do with it afterwards, you have already contributed to the consumeristic machine buying this very over priced car, because it says soemthing about how much you are worth, or you are trying to express how much “cooler” you are than the rest of us who do not have $60,000 SUV piece of shits..

daniel added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:39 pm

OK, here’s my three-step solution.

1. Have it converted to a biodiesel powerplant. Of the options to keep it on the road, this is the most environmentally friendly. To destroy this car and create a new one will simply use up more resources and create more problems than you solve.

2. Hold a raffle for the converted vehicle. All proceeds go to the charity of your choice, but publicize the charity so that we have an idea where it’s going.

3. Give the raffled vehicle away at halftime of the Superbowl. There are few bigger stages than the Superbowl to showcase what you are doing.

Using this plan, you’ve not only used the principle of “reduce, reuse, and recycle” in how you’ve disposed of the vehicle, but you’ve done something that can help charity and, hopefully, someone who can use a larger vehicle like that (trust me…when you live in an area with no public transportation and have several kids, you don’t buy these things for FUN!)

But most importantly, by doing the Super Bowl handoff, you’ve gotten the publicity that you are hoping to get for your project.

Let’s just hope DETROIT isn’t one of the teams playing in the Super Bowl when it happens!

Unbelievable! As an Alaskan resident living in San Diego at the moment, it seems extremely absurd! That is a car that is perfect for Alaska, not S.F.-I agree. All I know is that I drove so many beaters up there that I’m sure it caused way more harm (and scary moments being broke down in zero degree weather!)than 5 times this SUV. Please re-consider and give it to an Alaskan family-it’ll do way more harm than good!

Amy added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:40 pm

WOW, I agree that the car is a pig but wouldn’t it make more sense to somehow salvage some of the money that you wasted on buying the thing in the first place and help some folks that need their cars to get to work to be able to feed their families. Just destroying the car and wasting, what $60K or more, is wonderful as long as you can afford it. The problem is there are a lot of us that can’t. Quit wasting resources, even if you think that it will make the world a better place!!!

Willard added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:41 pm

I will trade you my 02 40mpg saturn for your rover. I live in NY and drive 32foot trailers for a living. I would like a more reliable 4 wheel drive car so I can make it back and forth to work in the blizzards and rain. I only have a 20 minute ride to work but it’s on rough back roads. You are looking for a car that suite your needs, and I am looking for a car that suits mine. So what do you say? I won’t drive it that much so the effects of pollution would be minimal. Smartly save the planet.

joe added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:42 pm

I think you should soak the car in gasoline, stuff it with grill propane tanks, drive it out into the desert, light it on fire, and watch it BLOW TO SLITHERINES! DOn’t forget to film it, this video would be FRICKEN awesome. And then put it on YouTube!

JOHN THE PYROMANIAC added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:44 pm

Well if you’re concerned with helping the environment take a deeper look into the vehicle. It has a aluminum head and block for the engine, aluminum is not very effecient to refine not to mention by recycling a stripped block and both heads would net more cash for blowing it up. If thats too much work, go to you tube, search Rally Cars and try to emulate their moves, make sure to catch that hospital visit on tape though.

Dan added these pithy words on Jul 24, 08 at 6:44 pm

How about you don’t buy the car in the first place, and how about PICKING UP A SCIENCE BOOK!

There is no single cause of climate change, it occurs from numerous variables, but solar radiation is the major force. Global climate change suggests an average for the whole globe, which is inaccurate, and will only allow for one or two variables. This make A VERY POOR MODEL. Also, what is climate? We are only seeing a very short amount of time as far as weather is concerned. What we could be seeing as abnormal could just be a return to normal.

There are numerous cycles which drive climate.

Super continent cycle - shows that supercontinents form and breakup every ~500 million years, ~300 million years to assemble and ~200 million years to rift apart. When the continents break up they cause radiation loss which causes cooling, when together they contribute to heating. Their position (lat./long.) can also effect the amount of solar radiation recieved, and can effect the length of a day, again changing solar radiation input.

This cycle causes:
Uplifting of land - causes climate changes due to changing elevation that effects wind patterns, increases radiation loss, creates rain shadows (rain takes CO2 out of the air), creates weathering rocks that can produce CO2, and creates deposition of rocks which takes C02 out of the air . Uplifts also create migration barriers allowing biological niches to be filled. What effect would were the 100 million buffalo on the plains last century having?
Changes in oceanic currents- the positions of the continents control ocean currents which play major roles in the climate. Antartica has been in the same spot since ~145 mya, but its ice sheets only formed from 34-24 mya when the tethys sea closed and seperated the atlantic and pacific.
Changes in sea level - opening and closing, rising and sinking of ocean basins contributes to ocean transgressions and regressions and CO2 levels.
Drives volcanism - release gasses (CO2 and SO2) and cools the atmosphere.
All of these factors directly affect the carbon cycle.

The last supercontinent began breaking up ~65 million years ago, hence having a cooling effect. In the last 2 million years there has been rapid cooling over all, but consists of short periods of glacials and interglacials which vary in character. During the last interglacial period there were many periods of rapid cooling and warming (the global sea level peaked about 30 meters above present levels, if I remember correct). This reveals that there are causes for climate change on a number of different time levels because a cooling effect can not account for both growing and shrinking ice sheets, and a warming effect can not account for both shrinking and growing ice sheets.

Some of the causes of ice ages can be accounted for by the Milankovith Theory, which explains variations in solar radiation on a cyclic pattern and is believed to force glaciation.

100,000 year cycle - caused by eccentricity in the earth’s orbit

40,000 year cycle - caused by obliquity

and 19-21,000 year cycle - caused by precession

Submilankovitch cycles

Ice cores reveal that there are smaller scale cyclic changes in climate and ice sheet behavior. They reveal that during the last interglacial there were periods of slow cooling followed by short rapid periods of heating, called Dansgaard-Oescher events. Each warm period is cooler than the previous and each cooling period is cooler than the previous.

Bond Cycle - termination events that occur with Dansgaard events, a marked terminal dramatic cooling followed by dramatic warming.

The terminal phase of a bond cycle is called a Heinrich event (short events) and is seen in the geologic record as layers of ice rafted material (Heinrich layers).

Heinrich events are believed to be driven by ice sheets in the northern hemisphere which reach a critical size before they break up. As the broken ice melts it, and if the ice sheets are shrinking fresh water will dilute the ocean and shut off the atlantic conveyor (current which brings warm water from around the florida to europe) because the water is no longer dense enough to sink. When the conveyor slows the northern hemisphere cools as it loses momentum and warms after it gains momentum. If the warm period can melt most of the ice the cycle may continue, if it can’t the increased moisture can produce a build up of ice sheets. The cycles continue until a critical level of ice buildup is reached it and then discharged, when the discharge is enough to shut off the conveyor, cooling will ensue. When the conveyor is completely switched off a deep cooling is produced.

Solar Cycles

Schwabe Cycle - every 11 years the sun reverses polarity and releases large amounts of solar radiation.

Hale Cycle - every 22 years (every other schwabe cycle) when the sun reverses polarity it realeases even larger amounts of solar radiation.

Gleissberg Cycle - every 88 years (every 4 schwabe cycles) when the sun reverses polarity it releases even larger amounts of solar radiation.

There are also random periods where there are no sunspots (visible explosions on the sun’s surface that release solar radiation) which cause short, cold periods, like “the little ice age.”

Solar radiation, which comes in cycles is the main driving force of the earth’s weather and other factors are amplifiers/deamplifiers that occur based on being at the right place at the right time. CO2 levels (shown in ice cores) show that during interglacial periods CO2 levels were higher, but a higher level of CO2 doesn’t necessarily mean a higher global temperature.

Climate change constantly happens on its own and is driven by solar radiation and numeours other factors that we know about and don’t know about.

It been warming for 11,000 years and the current warming trend in not out of the normal parameters as seen in the past. If we are effecting the climate then to measure the change, the change would have to be out of natural parameters.

How about you convert it to diesel and run biodiesel like I am doing with my rover.

Hello, here’s an idea for the range rover… The truth of the matter is that the rise in gas prices has affected everyone. Alot of people in the U.S. always come up with this ” save the planet”, ” save other countries” idea. We can support other countries by importing their products, feeding them, making them healthier, going to war with them… costing the US millions of dollars and taking away from our people at home! If you are truly serious about doing something good with the Range Rover, do something that will make an impact on someone’s life who needs help, and do it here at home. There are so many people here in the US living with a disability or disease they cannot heal from. Why don’t you donate it to someone living with HIV/AIDS? It would help get them to doctors appts, get groceries, normal everyday things that something like that would help them out! I happen to be someone like that, and I would love to have a decent vehicle to get me around, it would make life easier. Think about it… ( just don’t blow it up) And while it would still be on the road, you would be doing someone a wonderful thing. Everyday thousands of cars go to the junkyard or get recycled and that plays a big part in helping out the enviroment. Espically older cars that do not have emission controls on them. So do a good deed, and donate it to me!

Ryan, don’t be a follower. Your crowd surfing shows that you are not a leader, even if you make great money. My point is this, man made global warming is a farce. If you had asked the scientists that do the computer modeling they could have told you that they used twice the amount of atmospheric CO2 in the model, assuming on top of that, that CO2 is absorbing the heat from the sun and then delivering that heat to surrounding atmosphere and is the cause of global warming. Second point, one, yes one volcanic eruption creates more CO2 than all of mans combined CO2 for a full year. If you know would please answer this question. How many volcanic eruptions happen in one year? No I will not give you the answer. Use the brain that you have been given for something else than making money. The answer is obviously more than one. Drive your Range Rover guilt free my friend and do more charity work, it will fill the void in your soul with that you seriously feel.

I love people like this. Across this country, people are struggling to make ends meet. Poor people who need reliable transportation, who drive back and forth to work every day in cars that they are just waiting to break down on them, then someone like this comes along and wants to blow a good, reliable, nice, newish car up just to make a statement. It is absolutely disgusting. Save the planet, but let the people suffer. Nice philosophy.
